BEIJING, January 19 (TMTPOST) — Chinese e-commerce platform JD.com (HKG: 9618) announced on Wednesday that it has formed a strategic partnership with Shopify (NYSE: SHOP) on cross-border e-commerce. This makes JD.com the first Chinese partner of Shopify.
The two companies will make use of each other’s advantages in supply chain and digital technologies to bridge the gap between overseas vendors and the Chinese market. JD.com and Shopify will work on building a convenient and reliable channel for cross-border e-commerce.

Chinese consumers will then be able to purchase products from international vendors on Shopify. In addition, JD.com will also build a direct-to-consumer e-commerce platform that targets the global market for Chinese vendors with the support of Shopify. This means that vendors on Shopify will be able to have access to quality products from JD.com’s supply chain.
“JD.com is thrilled to partner with Shopify,” said Daniel Tan, President of JD Worldwide. “We believe that the partnership will unlock the huge potential of the Chinese market for brands outside of China. At the same time, it will increase cross-border commerce by leveraging our global supply chain ability, simplifying what has traditionally been a very complicated process.”
JD.com will build a platform named JD Sourcing for vendors on Shopify, which integrate quality suppliers in China and JD.com’s product pool. JD Shipping will provide services such as shipment pickup, custom clearance, logistics and overseas warehouse storage.
Shopify currently has millions of vendors from over 175 countries on its platform.
“Bringing together two world-class commerce platforms—Shopify and JD.com—is a major step in solving cross-border commerce for merchants,” said Aaron Brown, Vice President of Shopify. “The future of commerce is commerce everywhere—and that starts by removing barriers to entry to one of the most important e-commerce markets in the world.”
