Beijing, June 27 (TMTPOST) – The Ministry of Culture and Tourism of China and four other government departments jointly announced that murder mystery games and escape rooms are now being regulated as new entertainment businesses.
It is stipulated in the notice that murder mystery game businesses should register with the local market regulator and apply for a business certificate in accordance with the law.
Murder mystery game businesses are also required to provide information on the scripts that they are using for the games, such as story titles, author names, a brief introduction of the story and suitable age groups.
It is worth noting that the notice highlights the protection of minors. In the announcement, it is stipulated that all scripts used by murder mystery game businesses must have a notice on suitable age group. Murder mystery game businesses are required to have warning signs for minors if their interior designs are not appropriate for minors. Businesses can only provide services for minors on national holidays, summer and winter vacations.
Businesses are encouraged to use scripts that promote mainstream values, according to the announcement. Businesses are also required to properly evaluate the scripts, performance, scene designs, props and costumes, etc. Murder mystery games are not allowed to include illegal content.
There is a one-year transition period for businesses to make relevant adjustments and become compliant.
Murder mystery games are generally party games where one of the partygoers is secretly playing a murderer in-game, while the other attendees must determine who among them is the criminal. Murder mystery games sometimes involve the actual 'murders' of guests throughout the game, or open with a 'death' and have the rest of the time devoted to an investigation.
