English|Nearly 70% Chinese Users Feel Manipulated by Algorithms: Report

BEIJING, December 28 (TMTPOST) — Nearly 70% of Chinese users felt that they had been manipulated by algorithms online in some way, according to a report jointly released by Chinese Internet security company Qihoo 360 and the Internet Development Research Institution of Peking University released on Tuesday.
The report, titled Chinese Users’ Perception about Security, was publicized by Peking University and Qihoo 360 to study different security issues in China, involving matters such as digital security, mobility service, artificial intelligence and metaverse. The report was conducted using surveys and online data, Tian Li, director of the Internet Development Research Institution of Peking University said.

As for Chinese people’s perception about cyber security, the report shows that about 70% of Chinese users worried about account information and personal data leakage while 60% of users in China believed that there are information leakage risks on the Internet. Around 50% worried about being cheated online and 40% expressed concerns over fake news.
Only 7.35% of respondents believed that the apps were extremely safe. Older users who do not use the Internet frequently showed higher trust in the digital environment.
It is worth noting that only 20% of respondents said they worried about cyber-attacks from hackers.
As for statistics on the younger demographic, around 60% of underaged respondents expressed concerns over cyber security threats from app downloads on their phones. 50% of minors voiced out concerns over cyberbullying behaviors on the Internet such as doxing, the report shows. There were also 50% of underaged respondents who worried about Internet addiction.
Users who are parents worried about vile content and online pornography most when asked about their concerns over children’s use of the Internet. While minors themselves worried about being bullied online, parents showed relatively less worry on the matter.
