English|Who Are Making All the Money in the Pet Grooming Industry in China?( 二 )

Liu Qian has a pet grooming business in Beijing’s Tongzhou district. She would often take in stray dogs and cats. “I would take in stray dogs from the street, vaccinate and deworm them, and then groom them. It’s an amazing experience to turn a stray dog into a beautiful puppy. That sense of achievement cannot be measured by money. That’s why I wouldn’t change my profession,” Liu said.
Of course, not everyone in the pet grooming industry is professional and caring. There are also unprofessional groomers who have dragged down the industry in the public’s eyes.
Earlier in November 2021, a Samoyed’s tail was cut off when being showered at a pet grooming shop, causing massive controversy on Chinese social media. Such incidents show there are also many professional workers and entrepreneurs in the pet grooming business who only care about making money and lack basic decency.
“The most important qualities that a pet groomer should have are care and patience. As for grooming skills, one can learn and improve later,” Tang said.
The business of pet grooming schoolsAs the demand for pet groomers surges, lots of pet grooming schools also emerge in the market.
There are more than 1,200 businesses specializing in pet grooming in China, according to statistics from enterprise record platform Qichacha. Since 2016, over 100 new pet grooming businesses are founded each year. In 2019, a total number of 208 companies were started, marking a peak in the industry. Besides pet grooming schools, many pet brands also offer training programs in pet grooming.
However, it is actually not difficult to become a pet groomer, according to industry workers.
How long does it take to train a professional pet groomer? According to pet grooming schools, the answer is “at least 30 days”.
“A 30-day Level-C (beginner level) course is designed for trainees with zero experience. The course will enable trainees to provide pet grooming services independently upon graduation. Graduated trainees can become a pet grooming professional or open their own business,” Zhang Wei from pet brand Petdog Pet said.
The Level-C course covers theories, pet grooming and some basics about veterinary medicine, according to Zhang. Trainees can also opt for higher-level courses that teach styling, hair dyeing, SPA and massage, etc.
“About 90% of our graduates would open up their own business. Very few would just work for others,” Liu Chao from Cute Menta said.
If graduates wish to only find a job upon graduating from a course, pet grooming schools would also recommend job opportunities to them as promised. “We have over 5,800 franchise outlets in the country. We would make job recommendations to you based on your location,” according to Zhang.
Pet grooming pays relatively well as a profession. According to Tang, an assistant groomer can make around 3,500~5,000 yuan a month if accommodation and meals are not provided. Pet groomers who have over one year of work experience and can perform grooming services independently can ask for a monthly salary between 5,000~8,000 yuan. People who are even more senior and have management experience can make more than 8,000 yuan a month.
If graduates wish to open a franchise outlet, franchise brands would also provide one-stop service for opening a pet grooming business, from site selection, decoration to operation. It is said that opening an establishment is more profitable.
“A pet grooming shop with an area of 60 to 80 square meters can generate a net profit of at least 200,000 to 30,000 yuan a year in a first-tier city. You can at least make 80,000 to 150,000 yuan a year in a second or third-tier city,” Zhang said.
“Our franchise outlets in Beijing can at least generate revenue of 30,000~40,000 yuan a month. Outlets that are doing well can achieve revenue of more than 70,000~80,000 yuan. In November, an outlet in Baiziwan made over 190,000 yuan,” Liu said.
