ByteDance explains the rationale for the decision to shut down the talent development center in the email. The company believes that some company functions might be meaningful for certain stages but could fail to keep up with the company’s development. ByteDance mentions that the skills and experiences the talent development center accumulated over time are not useful for the company now. The talent development center also created unnecessary workloads and kept employees and departments busy for nothing, ByteDance points out.
ByteDance states that talent development will remain an important agenda for the company but it will focus more on practical matters to realize talent development. ByteDance will continue to streamline its HR department, the company said.
ByteDance started to downsize its business operation in 2021. The company has been laying off staff at its education business and gaming business due to government policy changes. ByteDance’s advertisement business has also been impacted.
ByteDance’s education business, for instance, reportedly laid off nearly 2,000 employees in November. The massive layoff plan involved several ByteDance’s education business lines, such as Guagualong, Qingbei and Xuelang.
It is worth noting that ByteDance announced that it would recruit more than 8,000 new employees through its 2022 autumn campus recruitment earlier in August. After rapid expansion, the company’s staff surpassed 110,000 globally by August.
