The Solar Impulse HB-SIA was the first aeroplane powered solely by solar energy. The plane was developed by Swiss aerospace engineers André Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard and began its first powered flight in 2009. The aircraft was designed to fly around the world on energy gathered from the Sun.
Solar Impulse has a wingspan of 72 metres, which is wider than that of a Boeing 747, and yet it weighs only 1,600 kg, making it one of the lightest planes ever built. The plane is powered by four electric motors with a total output of only 10 horsepower, less than that of a typical modern-day scooter. The wings are covered with 11,628 specially designed solar cells that provide the plane with the energy it needs to fly.
The Solar Impulse’s flight around the world was divided into several legs of varying lengths, with each leg taking several days or even weeks to complete. The plane flew from Abu Dhabi to Muscat, then to Ahmedabad, Varanasi, Mandalay, Chongqing, Nanjing, and then on to Hawaii. It then flew from Hawaii to San Francisco, Phoenix, Tulsa, and finally to Abu Dhabi where the mission was completed. In total, the plane managed to stay in the air for a total of 25 days and nights, covering a total distance of 40,000 km.
In addition to its flight around the world, the Solar Impulse has also made a number of shorter flights, such as flights to the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris, as well as flights to the Expo Milano. It has also set a number of aviation world records such as the longest non-stop solar-powered flight, the longest distance flown in a solar-powered aeroplane, and the longest duration of a solar-powered flight.
【mp610 5B00】The Solar Impulse has proven that it is possible to fly an aeroplane powered solely by solar energy and has set a precedent for the development of future solar-powered aircraft. This is especially true in the area of long-distance flights, where the plane’s efficiency and agility make it a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuel powered aircraft. Not only has the plane demonstrated that solar-powered flight is possible, but it has also showed that renewable energy sources can be used to achieve some incredible things.
