English|Tesla Recalls 200,000 EVs in China to Prevent Accident Risks after its Largest Recall in US
BEIJING, December 31 (TMTPOST)— Tesla is launching massive recalls in two major markets across the Pacific, highlighting the safety concerns both in and outside its homeland.

According to a filling to the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR) on Friday, China’s top market regulator, Tesla will recall a total of 55,533 exported electric vehicles (EVs) in Beijing, including 19,697 Model S vehicles made between January 21, 2015 and November 18, 2020 and 35,836 Model 3 sedans made between October 4, 2018 and November 20, 2019. In Shanghai, the U.S. EV maker also plans to recall some of Model 3 cars that made in a Gigafactory located in the largest city in China, involving 144,208 EVs. The front trunk of these Model S vehicles could unexpectedly open during the movement and block the driver’s view of the road, thus increases the risk of car crash, while the Model 3 cars subject to recall also could have issues that obstruct the driver’s view and the collision risk may increase in backing up, the company explained. It added that it would carry out inspection and remove hidden dangers for free.

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Tesla reported 356,309 Model 3 vehicles assembled from 2017 to 2020 and 119,109 Model S vehicles made from 2014 were subject to the recall. The Model S recall was made because “the front trunk latch assembly may be misaligned, preventing the secondary hood latch from engaging”, and the involved Model 3 vehicles may have to replace a cable harness for the cable’s blocking the rear-view camera feed.
Tesla estimated the Model 3 and Model S cars that really have such technical defects would only account for 1% and 14% respectively. However, the EVs affected due to the callback in U.S. nearly equals to the company’s whole delivery in 2020, as the annual report showed it was delivered 499,550 EVs in the world.
