CATL decided to hold off its announcement about building battery plants in North America including U.S. until September or October, in light of the concern of triggering more tensions following the U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s trip to Taiwan, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday, citing people familiar to the matter. The biggest electric vehicle (EV) battery maker was previously expected to announce its investment in these factories in the upcoming weeks, according to the report. Report in March said CATL was considering investing $5 billion to set up facilities across North America to supply Tesla and other customers, and it was reported in May that the company weighed to split the investment between two locations in U.S. and Mexico, both near the border of Texas, , which is the home of Tesla’s new factory.
CATL and Tesla didn’t comment on the latest report yet. The news came as the U.S. and China relationship was down to a new low for Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan, which made her the highest-ranking U.S. politician to visit the region in 25 years.

It rebuked the visit a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiqués. “No country, no forces and no individual should ever misestimate the firm resolve, strong will and great capability of the Chinese Government and people to defend state sovereignty and territorial integrity and to achieve national reunification and rejuvenation,” the statement stressed.
China’s military is in a heightened state of alert and is going to launch a series of targeted military actions in response to Pelosi’s visit, a spokesperson of the Defense Ministry said late Tuesday. Separately, the People's Liberation Army's Eastern Theatre Command announced to have a series of maneuvers surrounding the Taiwan island starting from August 2, including joint air and sea drills in the north, southwest and southeast of the island, long-range live firing in the Taiwan Strait and the missile tests in the east of Taiwan Strait.
