The dark lived in the same house as Laszlo,
黑暗和拉斯洛住在一间屋子里
A big place with a creaky roof, smooth, cold windows, and several sets of stairs.
这是一间大大的房子，屋顶吱吱作响，窗户光滑冰冷，有几组楼梯。
Sometimes, the dark hid in the closet
有时，黑暗躲在柜子里
Sometimes it sat behind the shower curtain
有时，黑暗坐在浴帘的后面
But mostly it spent its time in the basement

All day long the dark would wait in the distant corner,

far from the squeaks and rattles of the washing machine,

In Laszlo's living room was the biggest window in the house

Laszlo looked out all the dark outside
拉斯洛望窗外看到了满眼黑暗
Above him, the roof creaked
突然，他头上的房顶开始吱吱作响
and he closed his eyes
拉斯洛闭上了眼睛
Now the dark was all Laszlo could see
现在拉斯洛只能看到黑暗
"no, no" said the dark again
不，不，黑暗又说话了
Not here, 不在这里
“Down here" 在下面
”In the basement?" 在地下室吗？Asked Laszlo，拉斯洛问
Yes, said the dark

Laszlo had never dared come to the dark's room at night

Come closer, said the dark

You might be afraid of the dark 你可能还拍黑暗

The dark peeks around the corner 黑暗从角落里偷看你
Wait behind the door，在门后等你
and you can see the dark up in the sky almost every night. 每天你几乎都能在天空看到黑暗
gazing down at you as you gaze up at the stars 黑暗从天空看着你，就好像你抬头看着天空的星星
Without a creaky roof, 如果没有吱吱作响的屋顶
the rain would fall on your bed, 雨水会打在你的床上
and without a smooth, cold window, 如果没有光滑冰冷的窗户
you could never see outside, 你无法看到窗外的景象
and without a set of stairs, 没有几组楼梯，
you could never go into the basement你永远无法进入地下室
where the dark spends its time, 那里是黑暗居住的地方
without a closet, 没有柜子
you could have nowhere to put your shoes 你可能没有地方放鞋子

By the time Laszlo got back into bed

the dark was no longer in his room

except when he closed his eyes to go to sleep

The next morning, 第二天早晨
Laszlo visited the dark in the basement, 拉斯洛又去了地下室去找黑暗
Hi he said, 他说，你好
Hi dark, 你好黑暗
The dark didn't answer, 黑暗没有回答
But the bottom drawer was still open 最下面的抽屉还开着
so it looked like something in the corner was smiling
看上去就像角落处有东西在笑
The dark kept on living with Laszlo, 黑暗还是和拉斯洛住在一起
